What is LTL shipping/ How is LTL shipping different from others and why is it important?
LTL shipping is freight that is less than a full truckload. This is usually anything under 15k lbs or less than a full 53′ trailer. LTL is important for this industry because it offers customers a more cost-effective way to transport their smaller freight. We can provide full visibility on tracking and strong carrier relationships offering great communication and competitive rates.
Becoming an expert in any subject matter is tough work, tell me about your process in learning about LTL in contrast to other shipping modes such as full truckload or flatbed
My past work experience opened the door to learning the customer side of LTL freight, so when I started here at Corporate Traffic I came in with the knowledge of LTL carriers and how the process works. Being on the third party side now it was easy for me to continue the LTL carrier relationships and build on my current knowledge to be able to grow this department into what it is today.
How has the expansion of LTL offering at Corporate Traffic impacted our service offerings and demand?
Developing this specialized LTL team/department has helped boost the confidence of the new sales team on the floor to sell LTL to new customers. We now provide monthly training to keep everyone updated on anything new regarding the current LTL industry, carrier relationships and any issues we may be seeing. The constant growth of the department has also encouraged our tenured sales team to reach out to their current customers and inform them of this mode of transportation we can offer as well.
What changes have you seen in the LTL market and how has Corporate Traffic adapted to those changes?
One of the biggest changes we see in this industry is rate flexibility. A lot of our carriers are on a dynamic pricing program so our rates run with the daily market and what suits the carriers best based off our discounted rates as well. Another challenge we face is the transit time frame. Delays happen in this industry and LTL is known for the longer transit times and we adapt to this by always staying on top of our communication with our customers.
What type of customer is the best fit for this type of service?
Many of our new customers are newer companies that have a smaller initial freight load. We build their trust with our service and it opens more doors from there. Many small companies don’t need to ship a full truckload but might currently be paying a full truckload price so we are able to come in and fill a need with a price point that works better based on their needs.
Some of our top commodities are food and retail, building products, and alcoholic beverages.
